Cold Snap Grips France

Cold Snap Grips FranceAfter a mild winter, France is now experiencing its first real cold snap with temperatures below freezing across most of the country. Yesterday there was snow in Marseille and the nation's electricity consumption hit a two year daily high. In the Dordogne, Périgueux and Sarlat recorded temperatures of minus 9 degrees Celsius this morning and the cold weather is set to continue till well into next week. Whilst Meteo-France say the weather is far from the coldest ever recorded, it is the unusual for the whole country to simultaneously experience temperatures below freezing for a sustained period.

The cold weather has swept across Europe from Siberia. In the Ukraine, over 100 people are believed to have died from the cold - it has been minus 35 degrees. Meanwhile in Poland, 75 people are said to have died of exposure so far this winter and in Serbia, over 10,000 people were trapped by heavy snow in their village yesterday. According to experts, Italy has had its coldest week in almost three decades.

The United Kingdom has not escaped the icy weather conditions with temperatures as low as minus 12 recorded in some rural parts of the country, including Benson in Oxfordshire. A weather warning is in place and widespread snow is predicted for much of the country over the next 24 hours.
